
Home’s History
This home is steeped in significant historical events, beginning with the Battle of Brandywine on September 11, 1777, where the Marquis de Lafayette, a French aristocrat and military officer, showed remarkable bravery under fire.
Despite being shot through the calf, Lafayette led an orderly retreat. He was treated by Doctor Chandler at this very house, as he was the only surgeon available within miles.
During Lafayette’s recovery, General Washington visited him multiple times, cementing the home’s place in American Revolutionary history.
Situated in the charming village of Centreville, the estate spans over three acres of mature landscaping. Notable trees, planted by Evelina DuPont, adorn the property, adding to its historical charm.
The foundation, which is over 300 years old, and other elements like the grand staircase and original stone walls dating back to the 1720s, offer a direct link to the past.
Its Current State
Today, the estate stands as a beautifully restored example of 18th-century architecture, complete with modern updates that enhance its historical features.
The home boasts seven working fireplaces, handsome paneling with built-in features, rich hardwood floors, and restored plaster walls. The home’s grand staircase is flanked by sitting rooms, each with a fireplace, adding to the elegance of the space.
