Home’s History

The Monroe House, a two-and-a-half-story Federal-style dwelling, was built circa 1819. This historic home was once the residence of Dr. Alexander Erskine (1791-1857) and his family.

Dr. Erskine, a prominent figure of his time, chose this architectural style for its simplicity and elegance. The house underwent significant renovations in the 1840s, adopting Greek Revival-style interior trim, which added a touch of classical sophistication to its design.

The double-pile side hall floor plan, typical of Federal-style homes, features a symmetrical layout that promotes balanced proportions and spacious rooms.

Other notable architectural details include an asphalt shingle gable roof, exterior end brick chimneys, brick load-bearing walls, and 6-over-6 sash windows.

The home stands on a sturdy masonry foundation, a testament to its enduring construction.

Its Current State

Today, the Monroe House remains a stunning example of early 19th-century architecture, preserved and maintained with care.

It spans 4,176 square feet, providing ample space and comfort, boasting six bedrooms and four bathrooms, making it ideal for a large family or those who enjoy hosting guests.
