Nestled in the heart of Oregon City, the C.G. Huntley House stands as a testament to the rich architectural heritage of the region.

Home’s History

Constructed in 1896 by C.G. Huntley, an influential figure in local governance and commerce, the house exemplifies Queen Anne Victorian architecture—a style renowned for its ornate detail and inherent elegance.

The Huntley House, situated prominently on an incline along Washington Street, has served as a witness to the evolution of Oregon City and beyond.

Oregon City, originally the heart of the Oregon Territory as its first capital in 1848, ceded its capital status to Salem by 1852 and eventually saw Portland overshadow it in terms of growth and maritime prowess.

Despite these changes, Oregon City continued to thrive, driven by its burgeoning paper mill industry and the gradual shift of its residential zones from the bustling riverbanks to the serene bluffs above.

It is in this context that the Huntley House was built, offering a scenic overlook and becoming a cherished landmark.

C.G. Huntley, before his tenure as a city councilor and state legislator, co-owned a local pharmacy and bookshop with his brother, embedding himself in the community’s commercial and social fabric.

His home, described in a 1903 newspaper as one of the “pleasantest little homes ‘on the hill,'” reflected his status and taste.

Over the decades, the Huntley House has hosted a succession of notable residents including a local mayor and even featured in popular culture, such as a 1962 episode of the television series “Route 66.”

This narrative elevates the Huntley House from merely an old structure to a symbol of local history and pride, celebrating its role not only as a residence but as a cornerstone in the story of its community’s growth and change.

Surrounded by lush gardens and majestic trees, the estate provides a tranquil oasis in the midst of bustling city life.

The exterior does have a storybook appearance because of the tower that anchors the cascading rooflines, which are enclosed on the lower level by a rounded porch with five sides.

Then there’s the exquisite gingerbread trim that reflects light and scrolls beneath the porch eaves, encircling the Juliet balcony on the second story.

The current owners have completely renovated the house, removing all lead paint from the exterior, replacing the plumbing, wiring, sewage line, and roof, and having a specialist come out to mill a new railing that exactly matches the original.

They have also reglazed the original wavy glass in the windows. The views of the Willamette River are even more breathtaking.

The interior of the home maintains its Victorian style, with the detailing matching—if not surpassing—the exterior’s flourish. The large entryway between them is decorated with a decorative grille at the top.

The floorplan runs from the foyer to the piano room on the left. This room opens to the dining room with cherry built-ins and the living room with its original mantel.

There are three spacious bedrooms and a wide hall bathroom with a tiled walk-in shower under a skylight that were renovated at certain points upstairs.

Along with the addition of modern conveniences like a dishwasher and refrigerator, the kitchen was also renovated, but the original features have been tastefully preserved.

The C.G. Huntley House features spacious living areas adorned with elaborate moldings and towering ceilings, creating an ambiance of sophistication and grace.
