The History of The Pratt House
Originally envisioned as a holiday retreat for the pioneering chemist William Pratt, often attributed to the invention of Jell-O, the mansion affectionately earned the moniker of Pratt House.
Constructed in 1928 amidst the architectural fervor of Mediterranean Revival style, the villa’s sturdy facade, adorned with concrete stucco, stands as a testament to its enduring elegance.
Stepping into the annals of history, the estate’s corridors witnessed the residence of Earl Tupper, the visionary behind Tupperware, before passing into the hands of Khalil bin Laden in 1980.
After the 9/11 attacks, Khalil bin Laden and his family hastily departed the mansion, leaving it abandoned. The property has since changed hands multiple times, with various owners attempting to restore or redevelop it.

Tucked away amidst a sprawling 17-acre estate, the villa spans an impressive 5,854 square feet, boasting not only the main residence but also a guesthouse, carriage house, and stables, all resonating with a bygone era’s charm.

Current Status of the Home
In 2021, the current owner, an LLC, filed a notice to commence “improvements” on the property. Demolition of the mansion, as well as other structures on the 17-acre estate, began in late April 2024 and is expected to take several weeks to complete.
The plan for the property going forward is to develop a mix of commercial space, preserved lakefront acres, and multi-family housing, though the specific details have not yet been finalized.
