Home’s History
Nestled within the historic precincts of Charleston’s Navy Shipyard lies a remarkable testament to architectural grandeur and historical significance – the Admiral’s House, also known as Quarters A.
This magnificent mansion, constructed in the year 1905, is steeped in a rich tapestry of naval history, embodying the opulence and strategic importance of its time.

As the second oldest edifice in the shipyard, it has stood witness to the evolving narratives of military prowess and social elegance, its very walls resonating with tales of grandeur and valor.
However, the cessation of operations at the naval base marked the beginning of a period of neglect for the Admiral’s House.

For eighteen long years, it remained vacant, a silent behemoth whose deteriorating facade belied the rich history contained within its walls.
The journey towards the restoration of the Admiral’s House was a monumental undertaking, entrusted to the skilled hands of Spratlin & Son Construction.
The challenge lay not only in addressing the structural deteriorations wrought by time but also in retaining the essence of the mansion’s original grandeur.
This included salvaging and refurbishing the original flooring, windows, doors, and even the minutiae of hardware that contributed to the mansion’s aesthetic and functional integrity.
Exterior View (Before and After)
The exterior of the mansion, with its bold columns and intricate detailing, was restored to its original state, standing once again as a proud testament to its Neo-Classical and Italianate influences.

The introduction of a new copper roof not only addressed the practical considerations of durability and protection but also complemented the aesthetic authenticity of the restoration.

Interior View (Before and After)
The mansion’s interiors underwent a transformation that was both respectful of its historical context and attentive to contemporary standards of comfort and functionality.

Designer Karrie Britton took on the formidable task of reimagining the interior spaces, drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of lives that had once animated these rooms.
The design approach was rooted in a reverence for the mansion’s past, incorporating period antiques and custom reproductions that echoed the global influences and exotic experiences of the Admirals who had once resided there.

The result was a harmonious blend of historical authenticity and modern elegance, inviting occupants to step back in time while enjoying the comforts of present-day luxury.

The restoration of the Admiral’s House was completed in September 2020, after two years of dedicated effort and an investment of $4.3 million.
This monumental achievement was not just a victory for architectural preservation but also a significant contribution to the cultural and historical fabric of Charleston.

Today, the Admiral’s House stands as a beacon of historical preservation and architectural beauty, its restored glory a tribute to the collaborative spirit and craftsmanship of those who undertook its revival.

As it embarks on its new chapter as a premier bed and breakfast and event venue, the mansion invites guests and visitors to partake in its storied legacy, offering a unique window into the past and a luxurious experience rooted in history and elegance.
