The Oscar Mayers Mansion was built in 1910, a time of growth and prosperity in Evanston, a period marked by the expansion of residential neighborhoods and the emergence of architectural diversity.

Home’s History

Throughout its history, Mayers Mansion has witnessed numerous changes in ownership and occupancy, each leaving its mark on the property and contributing to its unique character.

The previous head of the Oscar Mayer corporation, Oscar G. Mayer Sr., owned this property.

After being sold in the 1960s, the house was neglected, flooded, and covered in ivy. It was so wet to the bone that it was known as the Chia House because water was seeping through it in several places.

The outside was covered in so many vines that it looked like a hungry tree was devouring the house. All the surfaces were covered with vines, even the porch ceiling.

A developer bought this home in 2016 after being abandoned for over a decade and restored it to its original charm.

After the Renovation

Jim Castenholz, a developer, recognized the possibilities of the home. Many of the original elements are still present in this place.

A large portion of the building managed to survive including crystal front doors, doorknobs, first-floor chandeliers, and flawlessly level floors.
