These events led to extensive water damage and the collapse of the front room and porch. Though the roof was finally repaired in 2023, years of exposure left parts of the home unstable, requiring a careful, phased approach to restoration.

Historic Elegance Beneath the Damage

During a recent site visit, the restoration team began documenting the interior for future renderings and assessing structural needs. Despite years of neglect, the mansion still showcases remarkable craftsmanship, including 9×9-foot pocket doors, a blue marble mantel missing its corbels, beaded wainscoting, and the original conservatory. These features reflect the home’s Romanesque Revival style, expanded under Walter Dunnington in 1897. His transformation of the property from a brick farmhouse into a 14-room estate displayed both wealth and an eye for detail.

Laying the Groundwork for Restoration

Backed by a nonprofit foundation, the team is now focusing on stabilizing the structure before larger efforts begin. Key steps include replacing the flashing along valley rafters, particularly near the tower, and securing the home with new windows and doors.

Broken and missing panes have left the house vulnerable, so sealing the exterior is critical. Masonry work will soon begin to repair facade holes. New electrical lines and temporary power panels will allow for dehumidification and climate control—essential for preserving interior elements like the woodwork and conservatory.

The Dunnington Mansion sits within the Manor Golf Club, creating logistical challenges for restoration, but the project is gaining traction. The goal is to restore the home’s historic integrity while making it structurally sound. With careful planning and community support, the team hopes to rescue one of Virginia’s architectural gems.
