The historic Frank J. Craycroft Home in Fresno, California, is undergoing a significant restoration after decades of neglect. Built in 1927 by Frank J. Craycroft, heir to the Craycroft Brick Company, the two-story brick residence was intended to showcase the company’s craftsmanship. The home features intricate brickwork that highlights the company’s signature style, serving as both a family residence and a testament to their legacy. The Craycroft family’s bricks contributed to many of Fresno’s notable structures, including the Fresno Water Tower and the old Fresno Courthouse.

Vacant since 1979, the home suffered from vandalism and deterioration. Over the years, trespassers and the elements took a toll on the structure, leaving it in a state of severe disrepair. In 2017, developer Reza Assemi purchased the property to prevent its demolition and embarked on a meticulous restoration to return it to its original glory. Assemi, known for his efforts in revitalizing historic properties, saw the Craycroft Home as a key piece of Fresno’s architectural heritage worth saving.

Assemi’s restoration plan includes transforming the Craycroft Home into a mixed-use space, potentially accommodating boutique retail or office functions. The goal is to blend historical preservation with modern usability, ensuring that the space remains active and relevant. Additionally, six studio apartments are being constructed behind the main house, designed to complement the historic architecture without mimicking it. This approach allows for new development while respecting the integrity of the original home, creating a balance between the past and the present.

Collaborating with Paul Halajian Architects and BSE Engineering, Assemi aims to seamlessly blend historic preservation with contemporary design, ensuring the building meets modern standards while retaining its historical integrity. The restoration includes reinforcing the structure, repairing original brickwork, and updating utilities while preserving key architectural details.
