The historic Robert McAfee House, built in 1840 and located at the intersection of Bells Ferry Road and Barrett Parkway in Kennesaw, Georgia, is set to be relocated and preserved by Lee and Brittani Lusk, a couple dedicated to historic preservation. The Lusks plan to move the pre-Civil War-era home to the historic district of Ball Ground, Georgia, where they intend to restore it, potentially as their primary residence or as a museum.

The McAfee House holds significant historical value, having served as Union Brigadier General Kenner Garrard’s headquarters in June 1864 and possibly as a Confederate field hospital. Constructed with pine timbers joined by wooden pegs, the house retains its original pine floors, walls, and ceilings. To ensure the home’s preservation, Cobb Landmarks, a nonprofit organization, facilitated the sale of the property for $1 to a buyer willing to relocate and restore it. The Lusks, who have experience renovating historic structures, were selected from nearly 40 applicants. They have been granted until May 15, 2025, to move the house to its new location in Ball Ground.

The relocation process will involve dividing the house into sections due to its size. The Lusks anticipate that preparing the house for the move will take approximately six weeks, followed by a year-long restoration once it reaches its new site. This effort ensures that the McAfee House, one of metro Atlanta’s last pre-Civil War structures, will be preserved for future generations, highlighting the importance of safeguarding local historical landmarks.
