Few properties combine sports pedigree, privacy, and prime California setting quite like this one. Wayne Gretzky’s former Westlake Village mansion sale offers a revealing look at how trophy estates continue to command attention in the luxury market.

A Star-Owned Estate With Lasting Appeal

Wayne Gretzky, widely known as “The Great One,” has long been associated with excellence, and his former Southern California home reflected that same standard. Set on 6.69 acres overlooking the prestigious Sherwood Country Club, the estate carried the kind of celebrity provenance that elevates a property beyond square footage and amenities. Its reported $17.6 million sale price places it firmly in the upper tier of Ventura County luxury transactions.

The home itself was designed to capture a refined version of Southern California living. Earlier listings described a single-story residence of about 8,711 sq. ft., with 5 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms, along with a guesthouse and pavilion. The Gretzky family reportedly shaped the interiors around their own tastes and travels, giving the property a personal character that many high-end homes lack. That combination of scale and warmth is often what distinguishes a memorable estate from a merely expensive one.

Design details also played a critical role in its appeal. Past descriptions highlighted paneled walls in the den, distressed wood floors, and carefully crafted ceiling treatments that added architectural richness. A remodeled kitchen and a separate gym building further underscored the estate’s focus on both comfort and entertaining. In luxury real estate, buyers at this level tend to expect turnkey convenience paired with custom craftsmanship, and this property appears to have delivered both.

Why Westlake Village and Sherwood Remain So Coveted

Westlake Village has become one of Southern California’s most desirable enclaves for affluent buyers seeking distance from central Los Angeles without sacrificing prestige. The area offers gated communities, rolling hills, expansive lots, and a quieter rhythm than Beverly Hills or Bel Air. For celebrities, athletes, and executives, that mix of seclusion and accessibility has enduring value. A property overlooking Sherwood Country Club carries even more cachet because of the club’s longstanding reputation for exclusivity and manicured beauty.

Sherwood has often served as a magnet for high-net-worth homeowners who want a resort-like environment integrated into daily life. Golf course adjacency, scenic vistas, and tightly managed surroundings create a sense of permanence that supports premium pricing. In practical terms, a view over a renowned country club can enhance both lifestyle and resale appeal. Buyers are not simply acquiring a house; they are buying into a highly curated environment.

The size of Gretzky’s former parcel is another major factor. In an era when privacy is increasingly prized, 6.69 acres in this market is a meaningful luxury. Large lots allow for separation from neighbors, additional structures, landscaped grounds, and the kind of indoor-outdoor flow that defines top-tier California estates. For many wealthy buyers, land is now just as important as the house sitting on it.

What the $17.6 Million Sale Says About the Luxury Market

The reported sale illustrates how elite homes continue to perform when they combine location, identity, and livability. Celebrity ownership alone does not guarantee a premium, but it can sharpen public interest and help a listing stand out in a competitive field. In Gretzky’s case, the name adds a layer of cultural recognition that resonates far beyond hockey fans. That kind of visibility can reinforce the narrative of a property as a trophy asset.

At the same time, the fundamentals still matter most. Buyers spending well into eight figures expect strong architecture, generous acreage, quality materials, and a setting that cannot be easily replicated.

This estate appears to have checked those boxes with its single-level layout, entertainment-oriented design, guest accommodations, and carefully considered detailing. Those attributes align closely with what today’s affluent buyers are seeking: privacy, flexibility, and polished but comfortable living.

More broadly, the sale reflects the resilience of aspirational real estate tied to lifestyle branding. A home associated with one of sports history’s most recognizable figures, positioned in a premier Westlake Village location, naturally carries broad market fascination. Yet fascination alone does not close deals at $17.6 million. Ultimately, the transaction signals that exceptional estates with authentic character and enduring location advantages remain highly desirable at the top of the market.
