Lexington County homeowners may breathe easier this year as the County Council has voted a second time to maintain the current property tax rate, avoiding any increase for the upcoming fiscal year. This decision reflects the county’s commitment to managing growth carefully while keeping residents’ tax burdens stable. The final vote on the budget is expected in early June.
Homeowners Could Avoid Property Tax Increase

Lexington County Council’s recent decision signals no planned increase in property taxes for residents this year. If the proposed budget passes, homeowners will not face higher county property tax bills, providing some financial stability amid a period of growth and increasing property valuations.
Second Reading Brings Budget Closer to Approval

At its latest meeting, the council conducted a second reading of the budget proposal, reinforcing the plan to hold property taxes flat. Approval of this budget would mark a continuation of the county’s effort to control costs while maintaining essential services without additional tax burdens.
Efforts to Maintain Flat Taxes

“Our staff and our administration we were able to put together a budget this year with no increase so taxes will not be going up on property this year,” said Todd Cullum, Lexington County Council Chairman. This statement underscores the administration’s achievement in balancing the budget without raising taxes despite pressures from population growth.
A Culture of Cost-Consciousness

County officials credit strategic planning and a culture focused on financial responsibility. Cullum noted, “Holding departments accountable and we ask a lot of questions and we have a high expectation. We don’t always meet those expectations, but we’re certainly gonna strive to do and we’re gonna give effort and in doing that I think that the administration has created a culture which is cost conscious but they’re also quality service conscious too so uh I think it’s a blend of both.” This approach has helped keep expenditures in check while sustaining service quality.
Efficient Use of Resources

The council’s insistence on departmental accountability plays a key role in managing spending. Regular scrutiny and high standards ensure that taxpayer dollars are used effectively, limiting the need to increase taxes even as demands on county services grow.
Other Taxing Entities May Still Raise Rates

While the county portion of property taxes remains stable, Cullum cautioned homeowners about other tax authorities: “The county portion of your taxes of which we have the ability to vote on it and set that message will not increase so we can’t speak for other jurisdictions like schools and municipalities and agencies, but the county taxes, it looks like we’ll not be going up this year.” This means residents might still see increases on their total tax bills from schools or local municipalities.
Final Budget Vote to Confirm Tax Rate

The council’s third and final vote on the budget is set for its first meeting in June. This vote will determine whether the property tax freeze will be officially enacted for the fiscal year. If passed, Lexington County homeowners will avoid a county tax increase, even as the area continues to grow.
