In the vibrant heart of Washington, DC’s Anacostia Historic District, the residence at 1648 U Street, SE, is a shining example of how historic properties can be meticulously restored to serve contemporary needs while preserving their rich heritage.

Home’s History

Constructed in 1908 by the collaborative efforts of builder J.E. Webster and architect A.L. Fuss, this single-family dwelling was originally built for a modest sum of $4,500.

The home’s notable past features John Edge, a Weather Bureau employee and veteran of key historical events like the Spanish-American War, Boxer Rebellion, and Philippine Insurrection.

His courage during combat in the Philippines in 1899 earned him the Purple Heart, highlighting the residence’s deep-rooted historical importance.

Up until the 1970s, the home was particularly favored by veterans seeking accommodation, reflecting its longstanding tradition of serving those who served the nation.

After Renovation

The L’Enfant Trust’s Historic Properties Redevelopment Program transformed this once-dilapidated building into affordable housing, revitalizing its role in the community.

Rear Facade: Before and After

The 2016 restoration project, spearheaded by The L’Enfant Trust focused on the property’s demolished rear half, emphasizing the preservation of historical elements such as the bracketed cornice and siding.

This careful preservation allowed the original 1908 construction’s essence to be maintained while incorporating modern updates.

Among these contemporary additions, the integration of solar panels on the flat roof stands out as a testament to the potential of combining historic preservation with modern energy-efficient technologies.
